How to use your Xbox controller with your PC

Since the launch of Xbox One consoles, Microsoft has built-in drivers for its operating system, making it easier than ever to use your favorite console with PC games.

Use a micro USB cable

The simplest way to connect your Xbox console to your computer is via a USB cable. The cable required will vary depending on your console version. Pictured above is a black Xbox Series S console | The X has a USB-C input, and the red console is an older Xbox One model that has a micro USB (also known as mini USB-A) port.

Take a look at your console and see which cable you need to connect it to your computer, and it’s that simple! Many phone charging cables will be either USB-C or mini-USB and can be used for this purpose, or we suggested using cables at the end of this article.

Xbox Wireless Adapter

While all newer consoles have Bluetooth, some older models do not. The first generation of Xbox One consoles and the original Xbox Elite console don’t support Bluetooth, so if you want to play wirelessly, you’ll need an Xbox Wireless Adapter.

Simply plug the dongle into your PC or laptop’s USB port, and plug in the console by holding down the pairing button on the console’s bumper.

Supports the current generation of Xbox Series S controllers | X and the latest Xbox One controllers and second generation Elite controllers have Bluetooth connectivity. This means that you can connect it to any Windows PC, laptop, or tablet with Bluetooth capabilities.

1. Open your computer settings.
2. Go to Devices.
3. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
4. Turn on the console by pressing the big Xbox icon button.
5. Press and hold the pairing button on the controller button as you would to pair with a controller.
6. Click on the console of your detected devices to pair.

Take advantage of the Xbox accessories app

If you’re using an Elite controller, this menu is especially useful for customizing the buttons and paddles to your preference. The Xbox accessories app (Opens in a new tab) Available for download at Microsoft Store app Found from your search bar. Once installed, simply connect the console to your computer using one of our methods above to get started. You can also save two profiles on your Elite controller to switch between them depending on what you’re using it for.
