Richard Hannon is confident he can land at the Godmonte Chiveli Park Stakes on Saturday (2.25) for the first time since 2014 with Trillium, and he is one of ten left at Newmarket Group 1 after Tuesday’s losing stage.
“Since her win in Newbury,” said the Wiltshire-based coach who won the race with Tigi Wigge in 2014. [in mid-July] It has changed and it is huge.
“She kind of surprised me and Pat Dobbs with how much she had won in Newbury and then went to Goodwood and held the record for 31 minutes. Then she beat the filly who had broken her record in Doncaster.”
Since finishing second on her debut at Goodwood in June, Trillium has racked up a triple, with her latest Group 2 victory for the Flying Childers in Doncaster.
Hannon added, “I’ve always thought she wanted six gals. She didn’t settle down well in Flying Childers but came back from that in great shape. She’s getting better on her sanity and doesn’t need to. She gets a lot better to take a lot of beatings.”
Aidan O’Brien has won the race four times in the past six years and could head the challenge for Moyglare Stud Meditate.
Swingalong, winner of the Luther Stakes and top scorer of the Duchess of Cambridge Mogg, is also still in contention.
Course and distance winner Lezoo also has strong claims after rebounding from the defeat to Mawj when he finished far from Kinta in the set 3 Keeneland Stakes at Ascot in July.
Ralph Beckett, who coaches Lezoo, can also saddle the Juliet Sierra, while a second Queen Mary Maylandsea is also possible. The third set winner Treasure Trove was completed by Paddy Twomey, while Malrescia and the Wave Machine complete the roster.
Sky Beat: 2 Meditate, 3 Trillium, 9-2 Lezoo, 5 Swingalong, 9 Juliet Sierra, 10 Treasure Trove, Mawj, 25 bar
Hanoun: “We have everything to gain and nothing to lose.”
A field of ten is still in dispute over the Goodmonte Middle Park Stakes (3.00) Hanoun believes he has “nothing to lose” through the renewal of Persian power in his rivalry with Blackbeard.
The Amu Racing colt finished half length behind O’Brien Blackbeard at the Prix Mornee in Deauville last month.
Hanoun said: “I’m going there with a horse that we know is good enough and I think he’s going to run very well. He’s been going all year, he’s tough and he’s never looked better – he’s proven himself at the top level.
“I got damaged after Deauville. We pulled a little bit and had to go up to the side of the stands and race Blackbeard. At Curragh I couldn’t believe something beat him by seven lengths because I know what kind of horse he is – he has an excellent chance.
“Blackbeard is a very good horse, we may have beaten fairly and squarely in France, but half the length is the kind of margin we have to come up with again. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose.”
Marshmane and Gymcrack runner-up are slated to make Karl Burke’s squad, while O’Brien could replace Aesop’s Fables and the Antarctic, who finished third in France.
Charlie Appleby’s only representative is Mischief Magic, who holds three races in a row. After finishing third on his Goodwood debut in May, the Godolphin-owned colt made steady progress and its recent success came in the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes at Kempton.
Group B winner Royal Scotsman also holds a post, while Never Just A Dream and Once More For Luck can line up for Newmarket coach Ismail Mohamed. James Ferguson can send zoology.
Mill Reef winner Sakhir was pulled from the field, with Etisalat instead eyeing Dewhurst Stakes in Newmarket on October 8.
A total of 43 remains in Cambridgeshire’s £200,000 (£200,000) handicapped bet.3.40).
Sky Beat: 2 Marshman, 3 Blackbeard, 4 Mischief Magic, 5 Persian Force, 7 Aesop’s Fables, 10 Royal Scotsman, 16 bar
