Manchester United kicked off their new season in the Women’s Premier League with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Reading as Maya Le Tissier scored her first-team debut with two goals in the first half at Lee Sports Village.
Mark Skinner’s side took a 4-0 lead after just 35 minutes thanks to Le Tissier’s double – a straight and header shot, both from two angles from right wing Katie Zelm – with captain Zelm’s well-executed penalty in the middle.
Then, Alicia Russo’s header sealed the match as the hosts – who had been looking to improve last season, when they had just missed out on third place against city rivals Manchester City on the final day – made an eye-catching start to the campaign.
How Man United started their season in style
Benefited by a healthy 5,315 crowd, the home side took no time at all to fall into their opponents’ face, and made a breakthrough just four minutes later as Le Tissier’s effort from Zelem’s corner somehow found its way past reading No. 1 Grace Moloney.
Ten minutes later, the United captain, who had made her 100th appearance for the club, quietly converted a penalty after Moloney was judged to have caught Russo as the goalkeeper slashed off her line to lock down the England international.
It didn’t take long for United to add the third goal either, as Le Tissier, signed from Brighton in the summer, scored again from Zelem’s corner, but this time with an excellent header.
Rosso ended the scoring in the frantic first half by ending a great move from the right, and he headed in the corner after a wonderful cross from Spaniard Lucia Garcia.
That was the point in terms of scoring as the hosts lifted their foot off the gas after the first half, but nonetheless it was a great way to start the new season on the part of Skinner as they look to smash the top three at Chelsea last season. Arsenal and City
