The 48MP sensor may tempt you to choose more storage space

Due to the larger definition of the main sensor of Iphone 14 Pro, images recorded in ProRAW will occupy three times more storage space.

One of the main new features announced for the iPhone 14 Pro of this new generation has to do with the wide-angle image sensor. Apple has already chosen to follow most manufacturers to offer a larger and, above all, better specific image sensor, with a resolution of 48 megapixels.

48MP sensor, why?

Thus, this new sensor has a size advantage over previous generations with support for pixel binning. By default, the photographs – the sensor cells responsible for registering each pixel of the image – are grouped into groups of four to create a single pixel in the final image, and thus reduced to 12 megapixels. Thus, if the image locations are in fact smaller than those on previous iPhones – with a side of 1.2 μm versus 1.9 μm so far – then the image clusters this time around have a side of 2.4 μm.

Thus, allowing not only better dynamic range, but also better digital noise management. Apple’s algorithms will already be able to average the hue on all four pixels to reduce the risk of graininess.

A 48MP sensor is also used to allow for a 2x hybrid zoom in the image, without loss, while maintaining a 12MP shot, but without pixel binning this time around.

However, if the 12MP mode is activated by default, Apple will still allow users to choose to take 48MP shots with its ProRAW mode. And in this case, it will still be necessary to closely monitor the storage.

RAW files are much heavier with this new sensor

As we know, RAW files are much more dense in storage than simple JPG images. However, with a 48-megapixel sensor, images will also be selected better, and therefore with a greater weight than the previous generation.

As reported by MacRumors, YouTuber Sara Dietschy’s grip allows you to get an idea of ​​the weight of the iPhone 14 Pro’s RAW files. In his video, we can discover that an image taken with the main wide-angle camera in RAW format of 48 megapixels (8064 x 6048 pixels) weighs just over 80 MB.

So MacRumors reports that the ProRAW images were taken with this new sensor Show Almost three times more weight than those captured with previous iPhones. This is certainly a good point, because the definition is four times higher, but it does mean, however, that iPhone storage can reach its limits quickly. Remember that the iPhone 14 Pro is available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage capacities. With the 128GB model, we can therefore count on just over 1,000 images in the 48MP ProRAW before storage approaches its limits.

Remember, however, that ProRAW files are not intended to be kept on a smartphone, but must be edited before converting to JPG for sharing. It is a file format that allows editing with a wider range in terms of both colorimetry and dynamic range, for more accurate image development.
