At the top of the iPhone 14 screen, you may notice some small green and orange dots. This is what those points mean.
Apple MacBooks have a physical LED located next to the front camera module. When the camera is turned on, the LED indicator is also turned on. This happens in an actual circuit and cannot be circumvented via software.
The iPhone does not have a dedicated LED indicator for the camera indicator. Instead, Apple fakes this LED appearance by displaying a dot on an OLED screen.
What does the orange dot mean?
An orange dot means that an app is currently using your microphone. For example, the orange dot will be visible during a phone call. The orange dot does not necessarily mean that you are actively registered. It just means that the app can access the microphone at the moment.
If you are not satisfied with an app accessing your microphone, you can revoke the permission in Settings -> Privacy -> Microphone. The system listens for “Hey Siri” voice activation even if the orange dot is not displayed. You can disable listening to the Siri alert word in Settings -> Siri & Search.
(If you use the “Colorless Differentiation” accessibility setting, the orange dot will be shown as a square instead. This makes it distinct from the round green dot, even if you can’t tell the colors apart.)
What does the green dot mean?
A green dot means the camera is currently in use. This can include video from the camera and/or audio content from the microphone. A green dot doesn’t necessarily mean that your camera is being recorded, but it could be.
Some apps preload the camera even if the viewfinder is not yet visible, for performance reasons. If you ever feel nervous about allowing an app to access your camera, you can revoke the permission in Settings -> Privacy -> Camera.
How can I find out more about why dots appear?
The front app usually uses the camera and microphone. However, in some circumstances, apps can access these sensors in the background. For example, Voice Memos continues to record your voice note even if the app is closed. If you’re not sure why Camera and Microphone access is turned on, open Control Center and tap the Privacy header at the top of the screen. This will reveal a recently used sensitive list
Where do the points appear?
On older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 13 that have a display hole, the orange and green dots in the status bar, above the signal strength indicator, appear in the right ear of the notch.
On iPhone models with Dynamic Island, such as the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, these status indicator points appear in the center of the island. With this position, the dots look similar to the actual camera status LEDs on a MacBook.
However, if Dynamic Island has active content, the center of the island will be empty and the orange and green dots appear to the right of the battery indicator. For example, in the screenshot above, you can see the Voice Memos UI occupying the island so that the orange dot is moved to the right edge of the screen next to the battery icon.
